Mystic found this website, and when he sent me the link he goes "I hope this is a joke". It's advertising Slavery the Game. I'm not going to post the video they put up there, I'm already supporting the site too much by linking it.
It's advertising Slavery the Game, where you can buy, manage and exploit slaves, during the time of European colonial expansion. There's no real game footage (at least nothing convincing) and there's no company that's supporting it other than Red Javelin, that Mystic discovered was an advertising agency.
So now people are going to assume that gamers are sick twisted individuals because some company is "producing" this and instead of focusing on the product or idea Red Javelin was hired to sell, the focus is going to be how sick gamers are. Great.
I might be wrong and they won't focus on that, but when was the last time they let gamer culture over something that gamers have no hand in?
I hope I'm proven wrong.

If you want to link to something, but NOT promote it to the web search engines, try using "rel=nofollow" in the link. You have to tinker with the HTML just a little, but it's not hard to do.

ReplyDeleteFree expression is like a muscle: the more you use it, the stronger it gets. I actually_support_ FICTIONAL slavery for the same reason I support fictional violence and fictional promiscuity. You know the phrase "pushing the envelope"? Envelopes have no place in a free society.
Actually, isn't your stance extremely prudish for someone who plays vampire? The only possible actual objection to this that I can see, is that it symbolically supports (the thoughtcrime of) racism. Down that road is book burnings, including (or especially) rpg manuals. Look at all the thoughtcrimes symbolically supported by vampire: killing hobos for blood, wearing black clothing, etc. Isn't killing someone a worse sin than making him pick cotton?
(Feel free to just ignore my points and label me a racist, that'd probably be the best strategy if trying to rebut this. The R word kills all thought and is why things have been allowed to degenerate to this point. )

My point is that this isn't a teaching moment, this isn't an "intelligent" expression of the idea, that it is merely spectacle. Spectacle serves only to get attention, hence why I say there is no good reason for this. If you have read earlier posts about why I feel certain things are offensive, then maybe you would've understood. Instead you assumed my issue was "racism", which isn't the point.
ReplyDeleteWhen you look around in history, everyone, at one point or another, has been a slave. Everyone has been downtrodden. There is no reason to cheapen the experiences our ancestors had just in hopes of having a great marketing campaign.
In fact, if you read my post race wasn't issue. Sir, or Madam, I hope the next time you decide to rage against the "politically correct" machine, you observe the context of the article, what was explicitly said, and what was not.
